Hotels
Another hotel from well known in Uzbekistan and used to be quite good Malika Hotels chain - Malika Khiva hotel. The hotel is conveniently based next to the Ata Darvaza - the main gate of Ichan Qala architectural monument. Well placed just outside the citadel gates the hotel is very convenient for exploring the city and going out to eat at night. Location is good indeed, but Khiva is so small that no tourist hotel would really be badly located. You will have peaceful and uninterrupted sleep at nights during your stay at this hotel. Lobby is nice but setup to sell handicrafts.
The hotel is very basic and is lacking in personality. Hotel is well equipped with amenities expected by foreign tourists from the comfortable hotel: air conditioning, separate bathroom with bathtubs and shower in the rooms, direct dial telephone. Rooms are very small with only a small wardrobe, no other storage space or room for cases. Bad lighting, few plug points. Twin rooms have very small beds, with single sheet laid direct onto mattress. Double beds non existing. You will get a larger bed in a single room. Tiny bathroom which have no ventillation at all. No water provided in room, no toiletries other than cheap soap. Nice view of the town gate, but one could hardly open window as the hotel faces a rather nasty pond that swarm with biting insects as soon as the sun goes down.
No Bar. Nowhere to sit outside. The hotel is listed as being buit around a central courtyard but it is not. It is arranged around a central roofed atrium, very hot with no air-con or ventilation. The whole space is full of items for sale much like the rest of Khiva, and if you could have tolerated the heat would have been like sitting in a shop. This space could so easily have been a nice bar area....as could part of the breakfast room, and the terrace outside it.
Hotel Malika Khiva has 34 guest rooms in total. Unfortunately, sometimes you can’t find safe or kettle in the room and you have to order a pot of tea to your room or get hair dryer by request! There are double glazed windows with fly screens and clean rooms at the hotel.
Breakfast is nothing special, for example fried eggs are left sitting on a serving plate and are therefore cold, no yoghurt or orange juice, tasteless coffee.
The restaurant which is nearby serves great food. Please keep in mind that when you don't travel with a group you must order your meals ahead, because they can’t keep much in the fridge for some reason. So, do not be surprised if whatever you want to choose is 'finished' unless you preorder it earlier! There is a good sized local supermarket only about 200 metres away where you can buy most essentials.
There is a small yard in the hotel with Uzbek national sitting benches - "supa", where you can have breakfasts or relax and have a cup of tea after a tiring sightseeing day in Khiva.
There is Wi-Fi in beautifully decorated indoor courtyard. The staff of the hotel is very helpful, friendly and speak excellent English. Wi-Fi is reliable but slow and didn't reach far into your room.
Very basic hotel. There are better alternatives with much more character.
