Uzbekistan’s Samarkand announced as the World Capital of Cultural Tourism by UNWTO

As part of the anniversary 25th session of the UN General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization – UNWTO in Samarkand, a Declaration was adopted on assigning the city of Samarkand the status of “World Capital of Cultural Tourism”.

The document was signed in the presence of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev by the UN Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization Zurab Pololikashvili and the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change Aziz Abdukhakimov.

The initiative to assign the status of “World Cultural Capital” to Samarkand at the opening of the 25th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization – UNWTO was voiced by the head of state. The president of Uzbekistan called on the foreign delegates present at the event to support the signing of the declaration: “Holding the anniversary meeting of the organization in ancient Samarkand, the pearl of the Great Silk Road, a major tourist center of New Uzbekistan, has a deep symbolic meaning. Samarkand, which made a huge contribution to the development of two great eras of the Eastern Renaissance, is today becoming one of the modern tourist centers of the world. I hope that you will support our initiative to declare Samarkand the “World Capital of Cultural Tourism” and the adoption of the corresponding declaration.”

Indeed, organizing such a significant event as the 25th Anniversary Session of UNWTO in one of the most ancient cities of Uzbekistan – Samarkand was a great honor and responsibility for Uzbekistan. At the same time, the event gave a chance to boost Uzbekistan’s tourism and culture on international level, by demonstrating the traditional values of Uzbek hospitality combined with the modern conveniences created for the participants and the guests of this major UNWTO event.
