In a landmark initiative to boost regional tourism, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has proposed the creation of a unified tourism concept connecting Khorezm and Karakalpakstan through a dedicated “tourist ring.” This visionary route will link the most captivating landmarks of both regions, supported by a major overhaul of the connecting highways and roadside infrastructure, reports a Podrobno.uz correspondent.
The announcement came during the inauguration of the new Arda Khiva tourism center. Speaking at the event, the president highlighted several key destinations that will anchor the project. Among them is the Ellikkala District, located approximately 80 kilometers from Khiva, home to the ancient fortresses Ayaz-Kala and Toprak-Kala—sites of great historical and archaeological significance. On the shores of Lake Achchikkul, new infrastructure has been established to promote beach tourism, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the region's desert landscapes.
Meanwhile, in the Beruni District, the sacred site of Sultan Uvays has emerged as a prominent destination for spiritual and pilgrimage tourism. “And these,” the president remarked, “are just a few examples. There are many more waiting to be discovered.”
To support this ambitious plan, a large-scale infrastructure development program will soon be launched. This includes a comprehensive reconstruction of the Urgench–Gurlan–Mangit highway and a strategic enhancement of all major roads connecting tourist areas in both regions.
Mirziyoyev also pointed out recent infrastructure milestones in Khiva itself. A new railway station has been completed, along with a fully electrified railway line extending from Bukhara to Khiva. By 2026, this route will accommodate state-of-the-art high-speed trains, dramatically improving accessibility. Plans are also underway to extend these modern trains all the way to Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakstan.
This announcement follows an earlier presidential initiative to build a massive tourism complex named Star of the Desert in Khiva. Spanning over 2,000 hectares, this grand project will unite elements of safari, eco, and adventure tourism with luxury hotels, interactive museums, summer camps, entertainment zones, as well as gourmet food streets and vibrant shopping alleys.
By integrating cultural heritage with modern convenience, the proposed tourist ring aims to transform Khorezm and Karakalpakstan into a dynamic, interconnected destination—offering travelers a seamless journey through history, nature, and tradition.
