The first plane of the new national budget airline of Uzbekistan – Silk Avia lands in Tashkent

The capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent city, officially welcomes the first flight by the new low-cost airline Silk Avia today 21 March, on the festive day of the Nawruz Holiday.

The new low-cost regional airline will begin operating flights between the cities of Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara. Silk Avia plans to operate about 40 routes within Uzbekistan overall.

Today, on 21 March, the first arrival of the Silk Avia regional airline took place at Tashkent International Airport. The plane was traditionally greeted with a water arch, and the crew members were greeted with flowers and the sounds of national Uzbek musical instruments for celebration at major events – karnay-surnay.

On 23 November last year, the newly established regional airline company Silk Avia by Uzbekistan Airports signed a contract with the leading aircraft manufacturer ATR. According to the contract Silk Avia has purchased five new ATR 72-600, three of which were supplied directly from ATR and two planes from a lessor.

In addition to the signed agreement, the Silk Avia regional airline is now starting to operate with three used ATR 72-600 aircraft. ATR 72-600 aircraft with a capacity of 70 people is one of the most popular short-haul aircraft in the world. It is reported that ATR 72-600 is safe and economical, consuming four times less fuel than the Airbus A320.

Silk Avia plans to launch about 40 routes across Uzbekistan very soon – the flights will operate not only from the capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent city, to Samarkand and Bukhara, but also between other cities of Uzbekistan. The cost of air tickets will vary between 25 USD-28 USD, making it quite more affordable compared to the domestic flights being operated by Uzbekistan Airways.

Rano Dzhuraeva, Chair of Uzbekistan Airports, said: “We are excited to be soon launching our operations with an all-ATR fleet. As a new low-cost airline, we undertook an extensive review of which aircraft would provide the best solution. Our selection of the ATR 72-600 is the perfect choice for us as they will ensure we can offer our passengers the most modern, comfortable and reliable experience in the most affordable and sustainable way.”
