New App to Promote Safe Border Crossings by UNWTO

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) together with Wanderlust World has launched a new App, developed to enable safe and smooth travel during COVID-19.

Since many countries around the world begin to ease and lift travel restrictions introduced in response to COVID-19, the United Nations specialized agency has welcomed the responsible resumption of the tourism sector. Meanwhile, UNWTO has been highlighting the importance of providing trust in tourism during these insecure and unpredictable times.

The restart of tourism should be approached carefully and understanding the responsibility, where public health will be the primary concern, implementing innovations in full use.

One of the many available solutions is the new WORLD TOURIST IDENTIFICATION, which was designed to meet the new requirements of tourists, as well as hosting destinations. The current app is also one of many initiatives UNWTO is working on in order to drive tourism’s recovery worldwide. The App enables tourists to carry digital copies of their key documents in one place, which will make recognition of tourist arrivals easier, expeditious and much safer. The app is also targeted to reduce the risk of fraud and identity theft.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “The restart of tourism brings opportunity for millions, especially those whose livelihoods are dependent on the sector. This restart must be managed cautiously and responsibly, with public health the primary concern, and making full use of innovation. The WORLD TOURIST IDENTIFICATION app promises to facilitate travel across international borders, promoting trust and building confidence in tourism, essential foundations for the sector’s recovery.”

Since the start of the current crisis, UNWTO has been working on stimulating the power of innovation to facilitate to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on tourism and to get the sector ready to recover in a better and stronger way. For instance, the UNWTO Healing Solutions for Tourism Challenge attracted more than 1,000 applications from innovators and entrepreneurs in more than 100 countries all over the world.
